Misadventure in the Square: A Hedgehog’s Tale

In this episode, we'll explore a charming misadventure at Bratislava's vibrant Main Square, where friendship blossoms over a mistaken identity amidst the bustling city life.

En: In the heart of Bratislava, in the lively Main Square, which is usually full of stalls and people, an extraordinary story unfolded.

Sk: Jedného jasného rána, keď slnko len len vykukovalo na oblohu a námestie sa pomaly prebúdzalo do nového dňa plného obchodu a zhonu, Matej sa prechádzal medzi stánkami.
En: One clear morning, when the sun was just peeking out and the square was slowly waking up to a new day of hustle and bustle, Matej was walking among the stalls.

Sk: Mal rád tú vôňu čerstvého pečiva a zvuky mestského ruchu.
En: He enjoyed the smell of fresh bread and the sounds of the city.

Sk: V tom zbadal niečo malé a zvieratko sa mu skrylo medzi stánky s ovocím a zeleninou.
En: He then noticed something small, an animal hiding among the fruit and vegetable stands.

Sk: Matej miloval zvieratá a hneď mu prišlo ľúto opusteného tvora, ktorý sa, ako si myslel, túlal samôtne mestom bez domova.
En: Matej loved animals and immediately felt sorry for the abandoned creature, which he thought was wandering alone in the city without a home.

Sk: "Chúďa mačiatko," pomyslel si Matej a pomaly kráčal k zvieratku snažiac sa ho nenápadne zachytiť do náručia.
En: "Poor little kitten," Matej thought to himself as he slowly walked toward the animal, trying to discreetly catch it in his arms.

Sk: Avšak zvieratko nebolo mačiatko, ale ježko, a patril žene menom Marta.
En: However, the animal was not a kitten, but a hedgehog, and it belonged to a woman named Marta.

Sk: Marta práve predávala ručne vyrábané náramky na druhom konci námestia a nechala svojho milovaného ježka, Janka, aby si trochu prevetral v blízkosti jej stánku, bez obáv, pri teplej zemi.
En: Marta was selling handmade bracelets at the other end of the square and had let her beloved hedgehog, Janko, roam around near her stand without worry, enjoying the warmth of the ground.

En: When Marta returned for Janko, she noticed Matej trying to capture her hedgehog.

Sk: Priskákala k nim so slovami: "Počkajte, to nie je mačka, to je môj ježko Janko!
En: She hurried over to them, saying, "Wait, that's not a cat, that's my hedgehog Janko!"

En: Matej was startled and looked at the animal in his hands, which was gently rustling with its sharp spines.

En: "I'm sorry," he said, surprised, "I thought it was an abandoned kitten."

En: Marta laughed and explained that Janko was her pet and often people mistook him for a lost cat.

En: Matej and Marta struck up a conversation and laughed about the whole incident.

En: Janko seemed content to be back with his owner.

En: Matej then offered to help Marta with her stand, and they spent the whole busy day at the square together, selling bracelets and talking to people.

Sk: A Janko?
En: And Janko?

En: Well, he was happy to have made a new friend and that no one would mistake him for a cat again.

En: From that day on, the Main Square in Bratislava had one more special occurrence, and Matej, Marta, and Janko became friends for a long time.
